The Winter Garden Border
AHEC serves 8 counties,
many of which are on the
Texas-Mexico Border. The
service area is rural,
with a number of the
counties being
classified “frontier”
(less than 5 people per
square mile). The
Kickapoo Traditional
Tribe of Texas also is
included in this
catchment area.
The AHEC
works with tribal
leaders to address
health and social issues
associated with poverty
on the reservation. The
Winter Garden Border
regional has a strong
system of community
health centers, and the
AHEC works closely with
them to ensure AHEC
rotations for medical,
dental, and allied
health students and
providing housing.
The director position
for the Winter Garden
Border AHEC is currently
vacant. However,
questions about the
region, student
rotations, or student
housing can be addressed
to the South Texas AHEC
Program office.
