South Coastal AHEC is a
component of the Nueces
County Medical Education
Foundation and is housed
at the CHRISTUS Spohn
Hospital in Corpus
Christi. The South
Coastal AHEC is
associated with the
Corpus Christi Family
Practice Residency
Program and the newly
established Emergency
Medicine Residency
Programs.
Third and
fourth year medical
students annually use
AHEC rotations for these
two programs, and South
Coastal AHEC coordinates
housing for these AHEC
rotations. Much of South
Coastal AHEC’s efforts
are associated with the
medical residency
programs although they
still address health
needs in the 8 rural or
underserved counties
surrounding Corpus
Christi/Nueces County.
South Coastal AHEC
places medical residents
and rotating students in colonias (unincorporated
communities lacking
basic infrastructures)
so the future medical
providers can understand
and appreciate the
impact of poverty and
the environment on
patients. South Coastal
addresses the health
professional shortages
by working by
introducing health
careers to junior and
senior high school
students and has
developed health
promotion programs, such
as Tar Wars, that are
presented by medical
students and family
practice residents to
young people.
Belinda Flores, RN,
serves as the director
for the South Coastal
AHEC and is also the
Academic Affairs
Coordinator for the
Corpus Christi Family
Practice Residency
Program. [Belinda.Flores@ccfprp.net]
