South Central AHEC |
|

The South Central AHEC,
a 501(c) 3 organization,
addresses health care
needs in a 12 county
region including the
city of San Antonio.
Because of its location,
adjacent to the
University of Texas
Health Science Center at
San Antonio, South
Central AHEC serves as a
liaison for the AHEC
remote sites and the
UTHSCSA. South Central
has established a highly
visible Advisory
Committee, composed of
75 local school
districts representation
and representatives from
higher education. This
Advisory Committee has
established new methods
of encouraging youth to
enter health professions
and has used its
partnership to leverage
new funding from local,
regional, and national
philanthropic
organizations.
The South Central AHEC
encourages a "Grow Your
Own" philosophy by
helping school-age
children in its
communities become more
familiar with the
variety of health
careers available to
them and the pathways to
these careers after high
school graduation. This
includes coordinating
tours of the UTHSCSA for
students who express
interest in health
careers, a longitudinal
CATCH Academy which
establishes health
promotion and health
career exploration in
school districts, and
developing health
promotion/disease
prevention curricula.
The South Central AHEC
is advancing
Internet-based
programming in South
Texas, including working
with faculty from
Occupational Therapy,
Pharmacy, Respiratory
Care, and Dental School
to create Internet-based
programs. In addition,
South Central maintains
a computer-based video
library where health
professionals can
receive health care
updates on their own
time schedules.
The South Central AHEC
has an active Board of
Directors which oversees
the program and
determines activities
based on community needs
assessments. The South
Central AHEC is directed
by Paula Winkler. [http://southcentraltxahec.org]

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa
Family Practice
Residency Program Rural
Rotation
The CHRISTUS Santa Rosa
Family Practice
Residency Program Rural
Rotation provides
extended time for
medical students and
family practice
residents to work and
experience health care
in a rural setting
(Medina County). A
curriculum has been
developed that allows
students and residents
to experience
professional
opportunities in rural
areas in order to
address myths such as
lack of access to
technology, lesser
financial rewards, and
long hours of work.

Dilley
The South Central AHEC
is working with Dilley
ISD to develop health
careers education
through health careers
clubs at the high school
level. This will provide
an opportunity for
students to learn about
the wide variety of
health careers available
as well as participate
in hands-on activities.
University of Texas
Health Science at San
Antonio
(UTHSCSA) School
of Nursing
In partnership with the
UTHSCSA School of
Nursing, the AHEC
sponsors the clinical
component of the Health
Promotion Curriculum for
the Flex Program. The
Flex Program is designed
to articulate current
LVN and RN professionals
into a BSN status. The
AHEC coordinates student
clinical training in
community based settings
where the nurses can
increase their
professional knowledge
of how health promotion
is needed to increase
optimal health outcomes
within the community.
Nurse Friendly
The South Central AHEC
participates in the
Nurse Friendly Program
for Small/Rural
Hospitals. Partnered
with the Texas Nurses
Association and the East
Texas and West Texas
AHECs, the program’s
goal is to improve the
workplace for nurses in
small and rural
hospitals (<100 beds).
Our objective is to work
with our partners to
establish a “Nurse
Friendly” environment
that would retain
current nursing
personnel and recruit
future professionals to
rural communities.
