CSTP Involved in Five Major Conferences
Tina Fields, Ph.D., MPH
CSTP personnel have been notified that their abstracts have been accepted for five major conferences. Jose Jones will represent CSTP at the US/Mexico Border Health Association’s 64th annual conference “Promoting Health Through Culture and Knowledge” to be held in Monterrey, Mexico, May 1-4, 2006. Tina Fields will give a continuing education course at the Health Care Workforce Conference, to be held May 4-5, in Arlington, VA. Workforce personnel from throughout the US will participate in this annual conference which explores health workforce needs.
Tina Fields will also give a presentation “Community Ready/Family Ready – All Hazards Preparedness” at the National Association of Community Health Center’s 2006 National Farmworkers Health Conference to be held May 20-24 in San Antonio, Texas. The fourth presentation will be at the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships (NCCEP)/GEAR-UP’s Raising the Bar in Academic Excellence annual conference to be held in Washington DC, July 23-26. Tina will be presenting on the biomedical camp that CSTP implemented last summer in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The camp, entitled “Harlingen-CSI: Follow the Evidence (Choosing a Career in Health Care)” provided 33 students with the opportunity to consider numerous health careers. Participating students were active in the U.S. Department of Education’s GEAR-UP project (out of the University of Texas Pan American) which has the mission of increasing the number of students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. Eleven independent school districts in the LRGV participate in GEAR-UP. Finally, Dr. Fields will facilitate a session at the Texas Rural Health Association’s annual meeting to be held in Austin in August. The focus of this session will be to address mental health issues in rural Texas and to explore how specific communities have used creativity to fill the void in mental health workers.
All presentations not only showcase the contributions that all CSTP personnel are making to South Texas but will also highlight the importance of the strong infrastructure of the CSTP throughout South Texas.

On Friday, April 7, 2006, the South Central Area Health Education Center (AHEC) participated in Rawlinson Middle School’s Friday Forum. The Friday Forum gives students the opportunity to attend breakout sessions which provide a variety of interesting, educational, and fun topics such as music, art, photography, story-telling, cultural influences, and job-related information. The South Central AHEC participated by exposing students to forensic science through a Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) activity. The students walk into a “murder scene” and are then shown taped interviews of several murder suspects. The students take on the roles of primary investigator, evidence collectors, sketch artists, and fingerprint specialists. They collect evidence from the scene, dust for fingerprints, and compare fingerprints found to samples from the murder suspects. At the end, each team presents their theory of who committed the murder and how it was accomplished based on the evidence they collected.

Lower Rio Grande Valley Trauma Symposium
Tina T. Fields, Ph.D., MPH
Over 330 first responders, nurses, and physicians attended the 9th Annual Trauma Symposium, held on South Padre Island, April 5-6. Sherry Snider and Aly Fox, CSTP Interns, showcased the International Academy of Workforce Development at the exhibitors’ session. Topics covered at the symposium included forensic dentistry, ATV 4-wheelers and trauma, rapid intubation, penetrating neck injuries, geriatric trauma, running trauma codes, and preserving evidence at a scene. The conference not only provided an opportunity to showcase the International Academy, but it also provided the opportunity for CSTP personnel to network with valued partners throughout South Texas and to continue to learn other education areas in which CSTP and UTHSCSA can provide assistance.
Make plans now to attend next year‘s 10th Annual Trauma Symposium at the Shearton Resort, South Padre Island, Texas, on April 19th & 20th, 2007. Special events will be held in honor of this 10th anniversary. Watch the E-news for more details as they become available.

South Central HETC Matches First Year Professional Students with Communities
Tina T. Fields, Ph.D., MPH
Jose Jones, South Central Health Education Training Center program coordinator, continues to work with Dr. Abraham Verghese to implement health fairs in colonias throughout South Texas. On March 4th, eleven first-year medical students participated in a colonia health fair outside of Corpus Christi. The South Coastal AHEC joined with HETC to increase the number of screening services provided at the health fair. These health screenings are designed to provide first year medical students with an appreciation of environmental conditions within colonias, but also provide our future physicians with an appreciation for knowing how the environment may impact their patients’ compliance. The project has been so successful that we are currently planning to expand the program and include dental, dental hygiene, physician assistant students.
