Toni Botello, Corporate Compliance Officer with Community Action Council of South Texas introduces the instructors for the “Core Disaster Life Support “ course.
UTHSCSA-Center for Public Health and Community Preparedness offered the training as part of the Employee Inservice. |
Community Action Council of South Texas (CACST) in Rio Grande City wants their communities READY! The Health Programs of CACST provide comprehensive services through ten community health centers located throughout the CACST four-county service area. The four counties include Starr, Zapata, Jim Hogg and Duval.
On January 13th, at the South Texas College, the CACST sponsored a Core Disaster Life Support course for its staff. The course was offered as part of an in-service training for all employees. One hundred fifty staff members including physicians, physician assistants, nurses, social workers, administrative staff and custodians attended the four-hour course. The Statewide Bioterrorism Continuing education program offered continuing education credits to medical professionals upon completion of the course. The course was instructed by Dr. Tina Fields, Assistant Director of the Center of South Texas Programs and Dr. Miguel Bedolla, Associate Professor, Family and Community Medicine Department, UT Health Science Center San Antonio.
We would like to thank Dr.
Rodriquez, Health Resource Administrator and Toni Botello, Corporate Compliance Officer for the opportunity to train their staff.
Plans are underway for the CACST to receive the 8-hour Basic Disaster Life Support (BDLS) and the 16-hour Advanced Disaster Life Support (ADLS). Interest in all hazards protection is high in Rio Grande City, and at least one physician has volunteered to become an instructor for the National Disaster Life Support courses. For more information on National Disaster Life Support courses please contact Laurita Putegnat, Project Coordinator, at 210-567-7810

March of Dimes Photography Exhibit on Prematurity
Tina T. Fields, PhD, MPH
The Center for South Texas Programs was instrumental in getting the March of Dimes traveling exhibit on premature infants to be housed at the Regional Academic Health Center Medical Library from January 13 – January 20. The exhibit is composed of 25 poster-size photographs of premature babies, with a short description of the birth and outcome. Although an attribute to the success of modern technology, the exhibit also had pictures that portrayed not-as-successful outcomes (one, a grave site of a preemie that succumbed after 12 days and a second of a wheel-chaired bound teenage boy). Visitors to the exhibit were asked to provide their thoughts after touring the exhibit, and these thoughts will be combined with other comments from visitors throughout Texas who have viewed the exhibit. The exhibit initially was showcased at the Texas Capitol rotunda during the legislative session last year.

New Geriatrics Fellowship
Belinda Flores, RN
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has approved a Geriatrics Fellowship to start in Corpus Christi. Currently, applicants are being interviewed for the position. The fellowship will allow further specialty training of physicians in Geriatric Medicine. With the population living longer, there is a great need for Geriatricians to care for the elderly. South Texas has a considerable geriatrics population due to the winter Texans, so the need is great for more geriatric trained physicians.
