What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Toothache
Trauma to Jaw/Broken Jaw
Knocked Out Tooth
- Retrieve the tooth and hold it by the crown. If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it, preferably in the child’s saliva. Do not scrub or remove any tissue.
- Put the tooth in a cup of cool whole milk. Use water as a last resort.
- Take the child to a dentist immediately.
Broken Tooth
- Have a child rinse mouth with warm water to keep the area clean.
If broken piece is found, place in a clean container for dentist.
Use cold compresses on the area to keep swelling down.
Take the child to a dentist immediately.
Bitten Tongue or Lip
- Apply direct pressure to the wound with a clean cloth to stop any bleeding.
- Place a cold compress to swollen area.
- If bleeding does not stop, take the child to the emergency room or health care provider.
Objects Caught Between Teeth
- If child can hold still, carefully guide dental floss between the teeth to remove object.
- If object is not easily removable, take the child to the dentist.

Toothache
- Have child rinse mouth with warm water and floss to remove any food that might be trapped.
- If the pain does not go away take the child do a dentist immediately.

Trauma to Jaw/Broken Jaw
- Tie a scarf, handkerchief, necktie or towel around the jaw and over the top of the head to hold the jaw in place.
- Apply cold compresses to swollen areas.
- Take the child to an emergency room immediately.
