CATCH
Academy or
Community
Approach to
Careers in
Health is a
longitudinal
exploration
for high
school
students
during their
sophomore/junior
years of
high school.
The Academy
begins with
a week long
intensive
program of
introduction
into health
careers and
leadership
training on
the UTHSCSA
campus.
Students are
exposed to
the Allied
Health
careers by
faculty and
currently
enrolled
Allied
Health
students.
Additionally,
each student
group is
required to
select a
community
project that
promotes
health and
wellness
throughout
their home
campuses as
well as
establish a
Health
Careers Club
in their
school to
promote
health
professions
as careers.
Sponsored by
the South
Central AHEC
and assisted
by the
School of
Allied
Health
Sciences,
the CATCH
Academy has
been in
place since
the summer
of 2005.

The Youth
Health
Service
Corps is a
program for
9th and 10th
grade
students
interested
in health
careers. The
program
trains
students for
the
volunteer
setting and
encourages
them to be
active in
their
community by
providing
community
service at
selected
agencies.
Students are
recognized
for their
efforts and
qualify for
scholarships.

HOPE
Health Occupations Planning Exposition (HOPE). This program is a one-day event; the morning is reserved for junior high school students and the afternoon is reserved for high school students. The goal of the program is to develop and reinforce existing interests in health care professions. The event allows students to attend lectures on health careers, visit with health professionals, participate in hands-on activities and obtain information on the various health care professions.

Workshops
These
are
one-day
workshops
designed
to help
students
prepare
for
college
entrance
exams.
The
workshops
offer
guidance
&
instruction
on
verbal &
mathematical
skills.
Summer Biomedical
Enrichment
Program
This
program
involves
a
one-week
visit to
the
University
of Texas
Health
Science
Center
at San
Antonio.
The
junior
and
senior
students
rotate
through
the
different
departments
of the
University,
are
given
hands-on
experiences
and
interact
with the
medical
school’s
professional
faculty.
The
program
has been
enhanced
to
provide
an
opportunity
for
students
to
participate
intensively
in a
science
research
project
as part
of their
high
school
curriculum.
AHEC
Academy
This
program
is a
one-week
summer
program
for high
school
students.
The
program’s
goal is
to
provide
sixty
hours of
training
that
will
prepare
high
school
junior
and
senior
students
for the
school-to-college/career
process.
Training
is
provided
in the
areas of
personal
skills
assessment;
academic
awareness;
standardized
testing
preparation;
health
care
exploration;
college
search,
application
&
portfolio
creation;
and
college
survival
skills.
