Demographics of South Texas

Health Care Providers
Reflecting the numerous MUAs and HPSAs along the Texas-Mexico border, the LRGV, MRG, and WGB have lower numbers of LVNs, RNs, primary care physicians, pharmacists, psychologists, and social workers (per 100,000 population) than do other areas of Texas (Tables 18 and 19). EMS personnel are less common in the LRGV, and there is documentation of 200 unfilled paramedic positions in the four counties comprising that area. RN midwives are much more common in the LRGV and WGB. In addition, there are numerous lay midwives along the Border; there is an effort to certify these lay midwives, but many of these midwives are from Mexico.

There are fewer primary care dentists (per 100,000) along the Texas-Mexico Border, and somewhat fewer in the Coastal region, than in other parts of Texas (Table 20). An increase in dentists after 2000 will not be sufficient to correct this imbalance by 2010 (2010 estimates by linear regression) due to the expected increase in area population.
