  Demographics of South Texas

Health Facilities
The relatively small number of LRGV and MRG hospitals must take care of a relatively large number of people (Table 16) as well as cover an extremely large area (see Area per Hospital). Clinics and other facilities (Table 17) may address initial patient care, but not having hospitals in the close proximity for referrals remains a paramount issue. Only 16 hospitals in the LRGV, MRG, and WGB have obstetric care, areas that have fertility rates of 108.4, 94.2, and 80.1 respectively as compared to Texas’s 75.4/100,000. There are no charity hospitals and no hospital taxing district in the LRGV, and indigent patients are referred to Galveston, a thirteen hour bus trip.
