Humanism Elective at UTHSCSA
This medical
school
longitudinal
elective,
co-sponsored
by the South
Central
AHEC, is
designed to
provide a
service
learning
opportunity
for medical
students to
apply their
didactic
learning
with needed
primary care
medical
services to
the
underserved
of San
Antonio.
Under the
guidance of
medical
school
professors
and adjunct
faculty, the
students
rotate
through
“student run
free
clinics” at
the ALPHA
Home, a
residential
treatment
center for
women with
alcohol and
drug abuse
problems and
the San
Antonio
Metropolitan
(SAMM)
Ministries
Transitional
Living and
Learning
Center, a
two year
home shelter
for families
trying to
get back
into a home
and
community
setting of
their own.
|
This
rotation
supports a
core
function of
AHEC that
has been
its’ mission
since
inception.
One student
said it all;
“The chance
to meet
patients ‘on
their own
turf’ has
afforded me,
as a
second-year
medical
student, an
amazing
opportunity
to recognize
cultural,
religious
and
socioeconomic
issues that
will not
just make me
a better
doctor
someday, but
are making
me a better
person
today.
